This Thing Cursed My Family

Sometimes you come across something that just looks like something you should never have seen. This is one of those times. As soon as I set my eyes on this thing, I just felt like I'd suddenly somehow visually unleashed a plague upon my children and my childrens children and their children and so on until my lineage would be wiped clean from time itself. Then I remembered I don't have any children, and likely sadly never will, so I'm the only one whose facing eternal consequences for this and that's not really fair, right? I mean, what fun is a curse if it doesn't effect others? Boooooring.

But this mask is so terrifying that my girlfriend genuinely asked me to remove it from our recently viewed list on eBay, because she hated having to see it every single time she landed on the homepage, so I guess it is effecting someone at least.

Either way, this thing is downright awful and I love it. This is barely a mask, and more just a work of sheer horror. I figure it's supposed to be an old witch or something like that, but I can't really tell and the listing didn't really offer much either in the way of description of information so I'm left grasping at straws here. Whatever the case may be, it's obviously some sort of old wrinkled person/monster and the way it's sculpted is just pure evil incarnate. Because yes, the white frizzy hair and the lack of eyes and its warped nose are all very spooky, but let's be real here, it's the mouth that does the heavy lifting.

The mouth on this monstrosity is so weirdly placed and so weirdly opened, and the tongue looks almost split in a way, and of course the teeth are so odd and misshapen that it looks...wrong, but in the right kind of way. In a way, she looks somewhat related design wise to Chomper McTooth, just not nearly as exaggerated. But honest to god, this is one of the few examples of "if I saw this thing in a dark hallway I'd shit my pants and die of fright in that order" because it really is genuinely unnerving.

And it all really does boil down to the jaw, which just goes to prove how important the mouth piece of a mask is to the overall mask itself. Because yes, it's nice to have good detailing like wrinkles or on some monster type masks neat eye designs, and nice hair is always a plus, but there's something just otherworldly about a jaw that looks just the right amount of wrong that immediately skeeves you out as a human being.

I can only imagine what it must be like trying to breath through this thing. Perhaps that's why the mouth is designed the way it is.

Whatever the reason may be, it makes the whole mask, in my opinion. And it's a good example of one aspect saving an otherwise fairly mundane and standard issue design. Because let's face it, if the jaw hadn't been the way it is, this would just be yet another witch type mask, and we probably wouldn't be talking about it, but because of the over exaggeration, I feel like it warrants credit and designation. Also the fact that the top teeth seem to be just outside the gum line, something about that feels just so not okay.

And if you look at this side view, you can kind of see how low the jaw is, so it's definitely an intentional design decision. Still makes it terrifying, but at least we know now that it's not just an accident or something, which is odd because this entire mask feels like a goddamned accident.

So yeah, Lockjaw Witch here is truly a unique specimen and I am pretty happy to have run across it, because on first glance it seems so ordinary but upon closer inspection it's worth looking into. I'm not a huge fan of the hair, as it's just that standard white wiry wig hair, but other than that it's a pretty great design. The nose is a pretty good too, I didn't touch upon that much but I do think it deserves a shout out. Or, rather, a snout out, cause, like...it's a nose? Get it? Whatever.

Though, I don't feel as cursed seeing as someone has clearly decapitated this creature and put it on what appears to be a glass bottle. Someone has obviously taken the first step to stopping the curse, but still, this witch probably ate her fair share of children while she still could.

Not that I'd blame her for that, kids are annoying.

Still, I hope my lineage doesn't wind up cursed for this post, but if they do, at least it'll be on their heads, not mine. I'll be dead by then.

Take that, future generations.

Dr. Latexstein & His Rubber Brain Of Doom

Why does every single mad scientist look the same? Why's there no variety in this field? Dr. Robotnik, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Horrible, Professor Membrane, you name a mad scientist and immediately an image is conjured in your head, right? Specifically the goggles. They ALL have these goggles. What is it about these goggles? Where did this trope come from, because I, for the life of me, cannot figure it out. Needless to say, that's what we're dealing with today. And, as with most mad scientists, this guy is one ugly son of a bitch. That's another problem isn't it? They're all typically very unattractive. Big bushy mustaches, enormous noses, their brains popping out of their fluff of electrified hair. Oh wait, that's just Dr. Latexsten here. Yeah, you might be surprised to learn that - especially since you can't see it in the main photo for this post - you can actually see his brain. Wanna see his brain? It's pretty cool. Who doesn't wanna see a...

Over The Marrow & Through The Blood

Kids! Get your masks on! We're almost at Grandmas! You know, it surprises me just how many different monster designs have been created over the years, and I think it says something about the elasticity of what a "monster" can be that there's been so many unique takes on the concept. For instance, a monster can be a fully black mass with white hot glowing eyes, or a monster could be a tall creature with elongated limbs and sharp teeth that glint in the moonlight, or a monster can be a girl you take out multiple times who in the end ghosts you because despite saying she was looking for love what she was actually looking for was to make herself feel better at the expense of someone else (LAUREN), but no matter what your definition of a monster may be, one thing is certain: there will always be a new version of a monster. But so rarely do we get a monster that looks more like it's going to bake you cookies and tell you stories about the old days than actually do you h...

Miss Evil Gleeful & The Fantabulously Delightful Sins Of People

Besides looking like something ripped straight from the nightmares of a 10 year old, this mask has a almost hauntingly Jim Henson quality to it, doesn't it? Like something you'd see on the early days of Sesame Street or perhaps somewhere in Labyrinth. Those aren't insults, either, for the record. Well, maybe the nightmares part, I don't know. I'm not a 10 year old any longer and frankly my nightmares were never filled with things like this and were more filled with the dawning horrors that nobody loved me. I was a messed up kid alright? But my declining mental health aside, this thing is genuinely eerie. Every last proportion on this face is inaccurate or over exaggerated, and it reeks of theatre masks. You know the ones I'm talking about, right? The happy/sad theatre mask dichotomy you often seen. Perhaps one day I'll discuss those more in depth. Anyway, while it's certainly easy to picture this thing half lit in back shadows lumbering ever slowly...
